Cara is a wife, mother, and the Owner/CEO of Jazzie Beans LLC, a business she named after her Shih-Tzu/Maltese mix. Her dog Jazzie Beans is such a sweet and happy dog that Cara had to name her company Jazzie Beans to reflect that happiness and sweetness in her every day life and into her company! Before her company was born, Cara created the Sippie Clippie™, a patent pending clamp and cord accessory to prevent sippy cups from hitting the ground. When Cara's first son was six months old, he would drop his sippy cup all of the time. The first time he did it, he thought it was funny and so the sippy-cup-dropping-game began. Cara could not find anything on the market that would work on her high chair or table, so she went to the hardware store, bought a clamp that would fit over a high chair (which was super huge), drilled a hole and attached a cord and hair tie. Cara actually took her first prototype out in public to restaurants and received so much feedback. After receiving so much feedback, Cara wanted a small, fashionable clamp that was sleek and cute that would fit into a diaper bag or purse. While trying to juggle mom-hood and creating the Sippie Clippie™, Cara had another son. With her first son already an extremely hard baby and having a newborn, her invention had to wait. Her main job was to be a mom first!! It has been about five and half years since Cara had the clamp and cord device idea. After her wonderful boys were a bit older and she had a little more time to work on her project, she was able to hire a couple of engineers, an attorney and obtain the Sippie Clippie™ as it is today. It is an awesome gift for first time moms and baby showers! Please feel free to email Cara with any questions or comments, she would love to hear from you.

hi everyone and welcome to the inventors
0:03
Launchpad Network
0:04
I am carmine danesco your host for
0:07
today's show of the IOP HSN academy
0:12
sponsored by quirky I have with me
0:14
Cara Brea's a key Brizzy key yes before
0:21
the show started and we're going to talk
0:24
a little about her project her invention
0:27
where she is where she wants to take it
0:29
and then also we're gonna talk a little
0:30
bit about her experience at the HSN
0:32
event and we've gotten some great
0:34
reviews I want to bring her on the show
0:36
and we'll we'll start talking a little
0:37
about her idea hey Carrie over there I'm
0:42
doing good is it Kara or Cara I say
0:51
that's you you know with carmine I get a
0:53
I get a lot of odd names too so I say
0:57
the same thing whatever whatever
0:58
especially if people owe me money I say
1:00
you call me whatever you want
1:05
there you were at the HSN event the
1:08
other day and it was awesome by the way
1:10
we were there we were doing some
1:11
interviews and I wanted to talk a little
1:13
about your product once you give us a
1:15
quick rundown of it does have to be like
1:17
a pitch but but they know what you have
1:19
there and you're done the lock onto the
1:40
on the plates or trays because it's kind
1:49
of hard to get normal unless they come
1:56
up with you when you went in search for
2:00
high chairs to test it on every single
2:03
so yes
2:06
so that's actually when you think about
2:09
it everywhere I go in a restaurant where
2:12
they have kids you always see something
2:14
hit the floor and and I love like
2:16
playing the kids I'm always one like on
2:18
the other side like trying to get the
2:19
kid to throw something or drop but you
2:23
know it happens everywhere I mean it's
2:25
one of those things where everyone just
2:26
takes it for granted that's what happens
2:28
yes so a lot of parents are doing this
2:38
right the lick which is disgusting to
2:40
but anything and so it keeps it from not
2:43
hitting not getting dirty and prevents
2:45
less masks I mean what parent likes to
2:47
clean up a mess I made there to do it so
2:50
I continued and you know what's crazy is
2:53
there anything kind of like this on the
2:55
market like a strap of material with two
3:03
loops those didn't work for me so I for
3:07
my table and my head chair so I was like
3:10
how much has been sturdy because my kids
3:12
truck it so I was like come with a clamp
3:15
and yeah it's funny because I went to
3:18
Home Depot and I bought the biggest
3:20
clamp I could so for that I chair and I
3:23
literally took it out in public and
3:25
people were like oh my gosh where'd you
3:27
get that
3:27
that's like what oh well maybe I'm onto
3:31
something so I wanted a cuter one that
3:34
was colors pink blue yellow whatever
3:36
color and it was able to fit into a
3:38
purse or diaper bag so it's kind of
3:40
wearing went with it and yeah prototype
3:44
here yep pretty amazing now you touched
3:47
on several things I mean the the the
3:49
infant child industry is so vast it's
3:53
never and in parents are constantly
3:55
looking for something new or colorful or
3:58
anything that will help them with the
4:00
any bit of organization so I mean you
4:02
touched in such a such a hot industry is
4:04
that you know something that you were
4:06
like man this is going to be big this is
4:19
awesome
4:20
really are you kidding me and did some
4:22
more research I'm like oh well maybe it
4:24
could be totally awesome then honestly I
4:26
could never get it off my mind like I
4:28
gotta make this so you know and that's
4:34
something that a lot of it you again you
4:37
you're hitting exactly a lot of us
4:38
inventors you know I have this little
4:40
notebook that I keep with me all the
4:41
time because I'm oh yeah popping in my
4:43
head and when you have that one thing
4:45
you can't get out of your mind it's like
4:47
you have to make what am I gonna call
4:52
this sippy sippy Clippy oh my god you
4:57
know like and then you start dwelling on
4:59
what its gonna look like how it's gonna
5:01
function how it's not gonna hurt a kid
5:03
well the safety and yeah it's yeah it's
5:07
consuming then you're up at 4:00 in the
5:10
morning and you're like what am i doing
5:13
yes oh you shouldn't no there's no doubt
5:23
about the again I think you're it's a
5:26
great indoor industry great niche do you
5:28
feel that because you're inventing for
5:31
that type of market where you know it's
5:33
a child a young infant whatever that you
5:35
have to be even extra or super safe
5:37
about it yes CT testing for it just so
5:48
that we don't have any accidents I could
5:50
never bear heavy something horrible
5:52
happen on on my watch or my product so
5:56
yes there's there's extra precautions
5:59
for for everything baby yes and I'll
6:02
continue to I'll do more testing for
6:04
sure before it goes to market yeah right
6:07
I agree and that's something that I
6:09
could I could just tell like when you
6:10
started talking about it like yeah this
6:12
is not going near any child before you
6:14
know that it's safe so that was one
6:16
thing that I would worry about too I
6:17
mean I we we heard the launch pad we get
6:19
people that come in with with car seats
6:21
and different types of baby items for us
6:24
to evaluate or prototype or even
6:26
manufacture and I for once at the same
6:29
way as you I we worry about it we're
6:30
like they
6:31
we really want to do this you know it's
6:33
so important it's scary I mean you don't
6:37
like I just said you don't want anything
6:39
bad happen to any person let alone a
6:41
good child so yeah I think that's why a
6:45
lot of people stay away from and why
6:47
nobody has really come up with a clamp
6:49
record accessory because they're afraid
6:51
of of what could happen like I said
6:55
there's other products but there's
6:57
quartz so I'm assuming I would suspect
7:01
that I should assume I suspect kind the
7:04
same word but rephrase better but
7:06
they've done the testing as well so that
7:08
this doesn't happen to children well we
7:11
would assume they do but as we've seen
7:13
in the news a lot their recalls and
7:15
different things that happen it it's
7:16
it's you would you would assume but it
7:18
doesn't always happen so we're yeah with
7:21
the idea you know after the show we'll
7:23
talk about the a just an event but where
7:24
you are where are you at with your
7:26
product now are you look for
7:27
manufacturing you're looking for
7:28
investment some kind of social media
7:31
funding or where you wish your next
7:33
steps there but I do do some funding
7:47
whether I do another crowdfunding
7:49
campaign or I have tossed around the
7:50
idea investors it definitely will get
7:53
help with social media and just getting
7:55
people behind me to spread the word when
7:56
I actually do decide if I decided to do
7:59
the crowdfunding but that's always
8:02
helpful to get that's that's kind of
8:04
what you need like you just need
8:05
everybody on board and backing you and
8:08
that way the work can spread instead of
8:09
just saying hey family friends this is
8:12
it yeah do you find your family or your
8:17
friends when you talk about your
8:18
invention there they back you or they
8:20
finally say stop talking about this
8:28
they've always been behind me and all my
8:30
friends are like I need this if me
8:32
Clippy and I'm like I want to give you
8:34
this hippie Clippy I just have four
8:36
prototypes and I don't want to give you
8:38
my credit Oh stickers those are like
8:40
gold
8:42
Gold so yeah they hadn't been sick of it
8:46
yet I always apologize to you I said I'm
8:48
so sorry to talk about this again I was
8:49
like no no you went to HSN you pitched
8:52
on shark tank like whoa so they're
8:55
always excited for me that's great
8:57
that's awesome we are we always get a
9:00
little busier after big holidays it
9:03
seems like everybody sits around and
9:04
they talk about their adventure they
9:06
come up with something and that's like a
9:08
few days later we get all these calls
9:09
and emails about ideas and and hey I've
9:12
had this idea for five years and you
9:14
know they're making me move it forward
9:15
because they're sick of hearing about it
9:16
so that's kind of cool that that you
9:20
know people are behind you about and
9:22
again it's I think it's a good idea
9:24
because there's nothing out there
9:25
anything for babies is good it's got to
9:28
be colorful it's got to be fun with
9:30
people by it but it also has a purpose
9:32
it has a function so that's even better
9:44
recycled plastic seriously can never go
9:47
into the dump and then when you're done
9:48
you take the cord out and it's a clamp
9:50
for the rest really so it just it's a
9:53
good product for everything and toys
9:55
I just don't put it in the dump please
9:58
yeah well you know what that people that
10:01
you when you invent a product and you
10:04
have that little bit extra that people
10:05
all sudden go well you know it actually
10:08
helps in it because they're just like
10:10
they're not expecting that little bit of
10:12
extra and it's really cool you know
10:20
dress myself and take a shower it's okay
10:33
though you mentioned you mentioned that
10:36
you um you went to tried it for Shark
10:37
Tank like oh how did that what happened
10:45
so but it was a ton of fun I am I am I
10:50
would do it in a heartbeat again just
10:53
just be able to meet the people and to
10:55
get work
10:56
you know just and the more people I feel
10:58
like you get in front of somebody's
11:00
gonna go you know what maybe maybe I
11:03
could use that for my kid or maybe I
11:05
could get behind her
11:06
yeah no no you know you oh my god you're
11:09
exactly right just more people you talk
11:11
to the more people that know about it
11:12
it's so important
11:14
yes you stop you're exactly right what
11:17
kind of intellectual property protection
11:19
have you done on the product it went
11:28
through that they're issuing me the
11:30
certificate so that should be here I
11:32
think with in like six months
11:36
so yeah I'm just
11:38
but it went through everything Oh baby
11:42
that's awesome congratulations that's a
11:46
that's like a no we're the first ones to
11:48
hear about ideas try to hire a skywriter
11:59
but it's it's one of those things the
12:07
patent thing is always in the back your
12:08
head when it's at the Patent Office and
12:10
you never know when it something could
12:12
have come into mail and they're gonna
12:13
ask you for more stuff or so rou it's
12:16
like oh my god I mean every step you
12:30
know it's really good so so let's go
12:32
over the HSN event that you went to one
12:36
I mean was was that campus University
12:38
Tampa campus awesome or what I've never
12:50
seen something so nice it was I would
12:53
easily go to school there I would do it
12:55
right now and they have a Starbucks
12:59
underneath it I don't get
13:04
because there's so much sugar but it's
13:07
like you know what this is semi vacation
13:09
that's right that's right
13:13
yeah that's cool yeah and it is it's a
13:15
great campus and I was blown away by how
13:18
quirky and HSN coordinated the the show
13:23
and the Academy the different speakers I
13:27
mean they brought in lunch and snacks
13:29
and I mean it was just so coordinated so
13:31
well I was just blown away by the the
13:34
speakers that they that were there I
13:35
mean it was crazy
13:42
she was amazing the whole name she was I
13:49
could I seriously I'm starting
13:51
starstruck with her and I wanted to go
13:53
and get a selfie with all these people
13:55
but I'm not a very good person to bug
13:58
people I was still bad I'm like oh
13:59
they're annoying right now because they
14:01
just spoke and now everybody wants to
14:02
take a picture so I always kick myself
14:04
afterward but and then Bob Circosta oh
14:07
man he was hilarious and it was just
14:10
starstruck I could yeah I kept telling
14:13
my husband when I saw him later if you
14:15
can't believe these people that I saw
14:16
today that are amazing amazing great
14:19
speakers and there's but they are
14:22
approachable they're so nice they're
14:23
giving you so much information i sat in
14:25
and listen to some of it and I was just
14:27
like I mean they weren't holding
14:28
anything back they were just whatever
14:30
you needed to know
14:42
super donors yeah yeah no doubt no doubt
14:54
about it so no that's great I am super
14:56
glad that you were able to attend we do
14:59
push the show out for quirky you know
15:03
for people who aren't sure if they
15:04
should attend because I don't know about
15:06
you but a lot of people that I was
15:07
talking to they're like they were
15:08
waiting for somebody to say you know
15:10
okay so we want you to buy this or like
15:13
it was you know like a vacation rental
15:16
sales after the show
15:17
or something you'll be there was always
15:19
some catch to it but there was no catch
15:30
[Music]
15:31
there's not they're just good people
15:35
there's good people so yeah it was nice
15:37
it was the best training I could ever
15:41
receive for I mean you people would pay
15:43
thousands of dollars for what we got for
15:45
two days and for free I agree that's a
15:56
good idea
15:57
recording some of it because of what
15:59
important you can't you can't remember
16:00
all of it even if you're trying to jot
16:02
it all down it just there's so much
16:03
information yeah no that's good that's
16:14
good well I appreciate you coming on the
16:15
show today give us some of your
16:16
information I loved hearing about your
16:18
idea what's next year idea what do you
16:20
need that maybe if someone's listening
16:21
to the show what can you what what are
16:24
you looking for next for you next step I
16:31
need to do the tooling and manufacturing
16:34
and so I've checked I have like I said
16:42
my manufacturers I checked in China and
16:45
I'm keeping everything in the US so I
16:47
know somebody might be shaking their
16:48
fist at me right now but I just find it
16:51
really important to do that so I really
16:54
like my manufacturers so I just need the
16:56
money to get her going get her into the
16:59
hand is a paries well cool well we're
17:01
gonna try to push this out we hope that
17:03
somebody contacts you um I think you
17:05
have a great idea a great product I
17:07
haven't seen anything like that and for
17:10
that industry I think you're going after
17:12
a great tower for that type of product I
17:15
think it's pretty cool even though if I
17:19
said I don't like it you were still
17:20
gonna move forward anyway because
17:23
[Laughter]
17:28
compliments but I mean you do here no
17:31
yeah just like yeah well I appreciate
17:34
the feedback but I just gotta go for my
17:35
heart my good no you have to and and I
17:38
tell you what this little joke in our
17:40
office that if if the person who
17:42
invented the chia pet brought that to my
17:44
office I would have kicked him out that
17:48
just goes to show you I mean you never
17:50
know exactly all right with these know
18:08
so gotta go in your heart you got to
18:11
move forward so I'm right with you no
18:12
doubt about it so again thanks for being
18:14

18:17

18:50
like okay I have to stop saying that
18:52
there's too much G I'm gonna walk around
18:54
